How To Use This Guide
The twenty parts are ordered so that each one uses only what came before it. You can read straight through, or you can enter at the level you are already at.
If you are | Start at | And be sure to read | |
|---|---|---|---|
Completely new to shares | Part 1 | Parts 1 to 7, then stop. Do not go near Part 8 until those are comfortable. | |
Investing already, but by tips and instinct | Part 3 | Part 3 on business quality, Part 4 on sectors, and Part 16 on position sizing | |
Only ever going to buy funds | Part 18 | Parts 1, 2, 18 and 19. You can skip the derivatives entirely and lose nothing. | |
Comfortable with shares, curious about F&O | Part 8 | Parts 8 to 11 in order. Part 10 and Part 11 are the ones that matter. | |
Already trading options and losing money | Part 11 | Part 11 on the Greeks, Part 14.3 on selling, and Part 15 on costs | |
A word about the order The derivatives parts sit in the second half deliberately. Options are not an advanced version of shares, they are a different instrument with a clock attached, and almost every person who loses money in them skipped the parts that came first. If you find yourself tempted to jump to Part 11 because the Greeks sound interesting, read Part 10.4 on intrinsic and time value first. It is four pages, and without it the Greeks are memorisation rather than understanding. | |||
